The Mohan Babu factor appears to have forced the Praja Rajyam chief, Mr K. Chiranjeevi, to change the party’s stand on Telangana, sources said.

Mohan Babu, who is the archrival of Chiranjeevi, supported the agitation for united Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday itself and vowed to take up deeksha in Tirupati from where Chiranjeevi was elected to the AP Legislative Assembly.

He went to Tirupati and participated in the deeksha on Thursday at SV Arts College. The PR leadership feared that Mohan Babu’s move would instigate more agitations in Tirupati where hundreds of PR activists were demanding Chiranjeevi’s resignation since all the other 16 MLAs quit the Assembly in support of a united AP. Till recently, Chiranjeevi was saying that he would not resign since he was representing all the regions as the PR president.

As soon as Mohan Babu announced that he would go to Tirupati, Chiranjeevi camp on Wednesday night indicated that the PR will change its stand on Telangana.

The PRP president Chiranjeevi who was left alone in the pary with all others resigning is facing a big problem with the people there in Tirupathi. He said that he can’t resign in this present situation. He said that as he was representing a political party, he cant do things in favour of one group.

This is the hasty decision by the centre and so this should be condemned and i am here to guide the people in the right way, he said. Meanwhile the students in Tirupathi are raising their voices to make chiru resign.

Andhra Pradesh was plunged in political crisis on Thursday, hours after the Centre agreed to a separate Telangana state, with nearly 90 Congress, Telugu Desam and Prajarajyam party MLAs from the coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema regions resigning in protest. More resignations are expected.

Congress MP from Vijayawada L Rajagopala has also reportedly resigned from the Lok Sabha. Sources say at least five other Congress MPs from the coastal Andhra region may join Rajagopala, an industrialist-turned-politician who has publicly opposed the bifurcation of Andhra. Members of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) have vandalized his home in the past because of his stand against a Telangana state.

But Andhra Pradesh Congress chief D Srinivas said there have been no resignations. In Delhi to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Srinivas said: "All must reconcile now that the decision has been taken. There are no resignations. Please give them time to understand the decision."

The TDP’s case is even more piquant. The party’s traditional stronghold is coastal Andhra Pradesh. It fought the Lok Sabha elections with the TRS and other pro-Telangana parties, but party chief N Chandrababu Naidu has steered clear of voicing open support much to the chagrin of his allies.
